The 1 million-square-foot plant will be built on 180 acres along Interstate 10 at Texas 46 and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2011, said Jonathan Sangster, a consultant who helped Caterpillar find the location. Construction is expected to start within weeks.
The average wage for the 1,400 jobs will be $21 an hour, he said. The assembly, paint and testing plant will build engines for the truck, marine and electric power industries.70% of the parts will be exported to other parts of the world,” he said.
Seguin was in competition with Greeneville, S.C.; Montgomery, Ala.; and the Mexican city of Escobedo for the facility, Sangster said. But Seguin offered a strategic location with easy access to Houston ports, he said, and also has an ample available work force.
Current economic conditions have cast doubt upon the estimated start time for this development but the underlying advantages for businesses have not changed - this area will soon be an economic powerhouse.
