The pit is five acres by fifty feet deep. It is filled with 150,000 tons of co-mingled glass, aluminum and plastic scrap. It has already been sorted from organic/municipal waste. The seller estimates that the recyclables have a value of $14,000,000 and estimates the cost to further sort the grades of glass, the aluminum and the plastic suitable for shipment to customers at $7,000,000 leaving a net profit of $7,000,000. His conservative plan would be to employ a front loader, a sorting conveyor and four laborers for hand sorting to process and ship four 25,000 ton truckloads daily. Under this plan, it would take approximately six years to empty the pit at an estimated annual net profit of $1.2 million per year. An aggressive buyer could, of course, accelerate the processing and the annual net profit simply by increasing the capacity for processing. For example a doubling of the amount of equipment and the number of laborers for sorting would double the outbound shipments from four truckloads/100 tons to eight truckloads/200 tons and the annual revenue from $1.2 million to $2.4 million over a three year period. The buyer could either consider this a one time venture to empty the pit or they could continue the operation indefinitely by bringing in and processing new recyclables.
