Business for Sale Overview:
This transportation company is a privately-held trucking operation that provides long-haul services to FedEx Ground as an independent contractor. This operation is based out of the Dallas Fort Worth FedEx hub in Hutchins, Tex. (just south of Dallas). The essence of this business is simply to pick up and deliver trailers from one FedEx terminal to another across the country. FedEx owns and maintains the trailers, while the contractor provides the trucks and drivers.
The FedEx Ground transportation fleet is made up entirely of independent contractors. The Dallas Fort Worth hub utilizes about 60 trucks, 4 of which are provided by this operation, making it one of only two Dallas Fort Worth outfits providing more than two trucks to FedEx. In all there are about 40 contractors hauling trailers for FedEx out of Dallas Fort Worth.
Although this may seem like a typical long-haul contracting arranging, FedEx is one of, if not the, premier companies to be working with. Obviously, they are one of the largest shipping companies in the world, which means you have guaranteed freight as a contractor, but they also offer additional unique benefits. FedEx contractors have access to extremely advantageous insurance arrangements through Marsh covering liability, workman’s comp and physical damage policies, and they also allow the drivers to obtain health policies through Marsh. FedEx also provides benefits to the contractors such as a guaranteed fuel surcharge program and a tire purchasing program to provide outstanding savings to their contractors.
All of these benefits add up to explain why contracting with FedEx Ground is one of the most desirable relationships available in the trucking industry. So much so that there are no opportunities currently for new contractors to enter the program – the only way to gain access to FedEx long-haul routes in Dallas Fort Worth is to acquire an operation already servicing FedEx.

Property Features and Assets:
There is actually no need for office space to operate this business because of the affiliation with FedEx. The company’s trucks are stored at the 325,000 square feet FedEx hub, and all dispatching responsibilities are handled by FedEx. The company’s drivers only need to wait to be contacted directly to when and where to pick up what truck. So this operation can easily be run out of a home office, as it is now.
Market Competition and Expansion:
FedEx is constantly pitching for and obtaining large national accounts, such as preferred status with Home Depot and Dell that they already have – so new route opportunities and increased freight are constantly on the horizon. As a FedEx Ground contractor, an owner has the opportunity to bid on and receive additional dedicated routes to expand his own annual mileage revenue. As new routes are made available they are assigned to bidding contractors bead on factors such as safety compliance and longevity.
