Business Overview:
Built in 1888, this unique winery is housed within a historic, water-powered grist mill, perfectly suited beside the serene Tomahawk Creek. The winery is situated on 16.5 acres with 4.5 acres used as a vineyard. The property boasts an idyllic country farm setting in Pittsylvania County, VA near Danville. An easy 1-hour drive to Greensboro, NC and 1.5 hours from Winston-Salem or Raleigh-Durham, NC. The property is perfectly suited for additional farming, vineyard production, recreation. hunting or as a wedding/event venue. In 1988, the first grape vines were planted on the hill overlooking the mill pond, and in 1990 the first vintage of Chardonnay wine was produced. The winemaker’s historic house is located on the hillside overlooking the mill and was originally a store and the post office. The property also boasts an irrigation system and dogs to assist in preventing wildlife damage to the vines. Currently, the winery is producing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Concord, and nine additional wines. The tasting room is filled with memorabilia of Sgt. James Anderson of Company I, 57th Virginia Regiment, CSA, the builder of the Tomahawk Mill. Inside, visitors can survey the handiwork of a Civil War Sergeant who grew tired of farming and became a miller. The winery would be perfect for a Civil War buff and visits resurrect memories of Gettysburg since the builder of Tomahawk Mill was a survivor of “Pickett’s Charge” at Little Round Top. This winery and vineyard are a valuable part of Americana. The new owner of this unique business and property could enjoy the romance and ambiance of history blended with the quiet technology of modern wine-making along a peaceful mill pond and adjoining vineyard. The property also has the potential to grow into a wedding and event venue. Located in Chatham, Virginia, the county seat of Pittsylvania County. The area has developed a healthy retail base and private education to its economic portfolio since its founding. Chatham also boasts a stable water supply, easy transportation access and the Pittsylvania County’s general low cost of living to provide strong economic advantages for business development.
