A Worcester mom is determined to give premature babies a fighting chance though swimming.

Danny Bolivar knows firsthand the challenges preemies face. Her son Liam was born at 27 weeks, weighing only two pounds. He is now a thriving two-year-old (see for yourself), thanks in part to time he has spent in the pool.

Seeing his progress inspired Danny to open a British Swim School franchise in the area, so preemies like Liam, along with other children, could benefit from the wonders of the water. Classes start January 26 at 1 p.m. at the Hart Center Pool at the Luth Athletic Complex on the campus of the College of The Holy Cross. The Hart Center Pool is a year-round indoor pool, perfect for the year-round British Swim School program. This will be the second pool opening for Danny. She opened her first location in Paxton in December.

“This is really personal for me. I really want to help other parents by helping their children,” says Danny. “It touches my heart when I see a child progress in the program and then take that progress to other aspects of their development outside the pool.”

Each year, about 1 in 10 babies in the United States is born prematurely. Learning delays, coordination difficulties, and respiratory conditions are more common in preemies than in children who were born at term. Studies on swimming suggest:

  • Babies who swim at a young age, especially preemies, frequently reach developmental milestones before those children who don’t swim.
  • Swimming helps premature babies to catch up to their full-term counterparts.
  • Swimming is known to strengthen the heart and lungs, which can also help preemies overcome the symptom of symptoms of ailments such as asthma.

British Swim School is best known for its unique approach to swim lessons, teaching water safety and survival first, and swimming skill development second. Students are placed in classes based on skill level, with specific objectives, an approach not found in session driven programs.

Drowning ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the U.S. among children aged 14 or younger. Research shows that participation in formal swim programs, such as those offered by British Swim School, can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children who are most at risk for deaths caused by drowning.
